Abstract
Purpose: The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between self-rated health (SRH) in adults and their drinking pattern, including drinking status, binge drinking frequency, and at-risk drinking, and to compare the results across different age groups.

Methods: This cross-sectional study included a total of 15,335 subjects aged 19 or older from the 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to assess whether poor SRH was associated with their drinking pattern, after controlling for covariate variables.

Results: The odds ratios of poor SRH according to drinking status were 1.20 for former drinkers compared to never drinkers, and those according to binge drinking frequency were 0.82 for ¡Â1/month group and 0.74 for 1/week group. No significant relationship between poor SRH and drinking status, binge drinking frequency, and at-risk drinking was observed in young adults. However, the odds ratio of poor SRH was 0.70 in current drinkers compared to never drinkers in elderly. Odds ratios of poor SRH according to binge drinking frequency were 0.83 for ¡Â1/month group in middle aged and 0.69 for 1/month group in elderly. No significant relationship between poor SRH and at-risk drinking in all age groups.

Conclusions: Former drinkers were associated with poor SRH and binge drinkers (¡Â1/week) were associated with better SRH. Therefore, binge drinkers who perceive their health as good need to be classified as a potential health risk group and intervened. The changes in the drinking patterns throughout the adulthood should be taken into account when assessing the association between alcohol and health, since the association between drinking patterns and self-rated health varied among different age groups. Education with a lifelong approach with consideration of health status would be effective.
